There is no doubt that there always has been a mutual influence between cinema and fashion. Various designers have since decades back contributed to the costumes of many movies, and it’s not hard to find collections that scream and shout the glam and glitz of cinema.
Audrey Hepburn’s Hubert de Givenchy dresses, Marilyn Monroe in costume designer William Travilla and let’s not forget Tom Ford’s first movie ”A single man”, where style and fashion are, I’d say one of the main reasons to see the film.
Today every other fashion photographer has gone from shooting stills to make music videos or short films and it’s not hard at all to find directors dealing with editorial photography.
Nick Knight with his Showstudio.com was one of the first to realize the web’s potential reinventing fashion images and the way we perceive them, creating a new genre, the fashion film.
Social networks like vimeo, youtube and all the new video streaming channels have also helped strengthen the bond between fashion and short films.
No actual rules or stylistic features qualify for the genre, the one only real requirement is, well, to showcase the clothes, accessories or the specific fashion product.
Fashion short films are a perfect way of giving a collection or a brand something more then beautiful clothes to show, it’s an understatement to say that we who are the receivers cant fully understand the vision of a designer or a fashion house without getting a feeling for it, movielike short films are a fantastic and beautiful way to capture the values, inspirations, movements and well, feeling of the brand. And we all know that at the end of the day we do buy and shop with our emotions.
Italians are great in the short film department, Prada and Miu Miu frequent users of this creative method. Valentino making his films a bit more documentary-ish. And Dolce & Gabbana creating stunning films capturing their core inspiration and brand identity focusing on southern Italy and “La familia” (we might think what we want about their sayings about the “real and pure family values” but the films cannot be denied their beauty right?)
