The (Social Media) Super Models

Who ever thought it would be more alluring and enchanting to watch a super model do a ridiculous and silly selfie then a million dollar pose for a billion dollar brand? Please raise a hand?

Thought so!

I bet in between 1988-1992, also known as the “Super model era” you wouldn’t have dared to dream of it. When Super model-zillas like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer and Linda Evangelista wouldn’t

“Wake up for less than $10,000 a day”.  (The famous and legendary phrase established by Miss Evangelista)

That was then, how about today?  Well today you’ll find a Supermodel Era perhaps just as big as back in the days, only slightly “easier” as Naomi Campbell would put it, this is what she told a morning news show when talking about super models old school style vs. instagirls: “I just feel my generation of women, like Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington & Claudia we had to earn our stripes and take our stepping stones to get to where we have gotten; to accomplish what we have achieved to this date. I kind of feel like, ‘My God, we’ve worked so hard and we are still working at it – then it just comes like that for them.’ I am actually grateful for the way I had my career. I wouldn’t want it any other way. So that’s for them, this is me,”

The 44 year old supermodel said.

Cara_Delevingne_36Last year for the September issue of American Vogue (September in fashion being like January in life) the most important month and the best selling magazine month. American Vogue chose to put 9(!) so called “instagirls” on the cover. Joan Smalls, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse, Edie Campbell, Imaan Hammam, Fei Fei Sun, Vanessa Axente, and Andrea Diacono.

To get the cover of the magazine with a big V on the month with a big S is just what pretty much everyone who practices the religion fashion dream about.

They did not only put them on the cover they also named them “The instagirls”.

Now I guess they’ve put that name in the dictionary for all eternity.

So let’s talk a little about these Social Media super models, how come instagram (among other social channels) are making them so big?
7392096d0b7d613da9388bd7e5358c092bdea80bThis is what Gigi Hadid (2.6 m followers on instagram) said:

“Social media is definitely something that is setting models apart because it makes someone relatable,” Gigi Hadid, told The Independent.

“Companies are going to look at your following and your ability to connect to different age groups and different people and if you can connect to a lot of people by just being relatable and by showing people different sides of your life and different sides of you then you’re going to be able to represent a brand because you have a voice and that’s what brands are looking for.”

Personally I think she’s on point there, we live in a society where we look for the “real things in life” (knowing instagram is not fully the real deal but a whole lot of filters) comparing instagram to magazine spreads, movies and tv shows it is pretty much the closest we get to real life and real deals of the iconic and legendary.

I believe we are pretty fed up with Photoshop extravaganza and to much glitz and glam. We somehow need to know that they are just like us but with a slightly better filter? So that’s one of the main reasons I believe that the new era is here.

By choosing Jenner, Estee Lauder has made no secret of its desire to boost sales and growth by targeting younger consumers.

“(Kendall) is the ultimate ‘instagirl,’ and we are excited to leverage her image, voice, energy and extraordinary social media power to introduce Estee Lauder to millions of young women around the world,” the cosmetics giant’s global brand president Jane Hertzmark Hudis explained in a statement.

So going back to what Gigi said it seems to be pretty much the truth. So who are the girls definitely don’t need to use the phrase “Do you know who I am on instagram?”
